The Gold Suburban Express, commonly known as the Gold Line, is a premium CTA route which runs from Randolph/South Water (formerly Millennium Station) to University Park via the former Metra Electric District.
The Gold Line was originally a commuter railroad line belonging to Metra. However, for 3 years straight, the Metra Electric District had the lowest ridership of any Metra line and was the most expensive to run. Metra sold the line to CTA and operations began between Randolph and Matteson on July 17th, 2016. The line extended to University Park 3 months later, and once again to Peotone in 2017. The Blue Island and South Chicago branches were replaced with bus service.
